A Nomination for the Hematology/Medical Oncology Staff

One of our local 328 members highlights how this department has fared during times of change and how important the self- reliability and humor of the workers has been while management and leadership have been unstable.

Below is the story of a department and a nomination from Claire Irvan:

I would like to nominate the entire staff of Adult Hematology/Medical Oncology at CHH for the Golden Rose Award. This is too include PAS Staff, Medical Assistants, Nurses and Social Work. This nomination comes after our manager announced she will be leaving affective 6/30/2010. This means, upon the new hire, we will be meeting our fourth manager is five years. The fourth. What four managers translates to is extreme amounts of self managing, many people taking on extra tasks, high volumes of stress and no real consistent leadership. During these five years, we've also seen the dismissal of our Medical Director and then because of that the subsequent leaves of other physicians. We understand that change is going to happen, that life is about change - we work with Cancer patients and because of that change is a part of our daily lives. We are a crew that has learned to embrace that changes with smiles on our faces even amidst the grumbles. We have learned to have fun with the changes thrust upon us. To laugh with the changes when in fact we've wanted to cry. In five years our change had led us from our tightly cramped quarters in the Physicians Pavilion to our spacious digs down at the Center for Health and Healing (we were in between managers during this time as well and packed and moved ourselves). Change had led us through two medical directors as well as three and now quickly approaching, four managers. All of this and we have been blessed to be able to still provide the high level of care for our patient population without dropping the ball while meeting the needs of growth. I therefore nominate this incredibly amazing staff on the basis of change as well as the ability to be a self-sustaining and self-managing staff. I thank you for your consideration.
