Article 5: Definitions Question: How many hours are relief workers required to be scheduled? Answer: ZERO. A common misconception is that relief workers have a minimum number of hours they should be scheduled. In fact they have a minimum number of days they must be available. They are not guaranteed ANY hours.
Article 6: Employment Practices and Procedures
Question: Is the timekeeper allowed to change my punch time?
Answer: If you are asking this question they probably did not follow procedure! Timekeepers are not allowed to change your punch time without supervisors permission in which case you should be notified. A timekeeper is also able to change you punch time at your request. Question: Why haven’t I gotten a performance review?
Answer: You should be getting at least a yearly performance review. If you have not, you should ask your manager about it.
Article 7: Hours of Work
Question: How are non-overtime hours assigned?
Answer: If your department has a consensus agreement it follows that guideline. If it doesn’t it is assigned in the order listed in 7.4. Offered in order of seniority then assigned in reverse order seniority.
Article 8: Compensation
Question: Are we getting a cost of living raise? Answer: Yes! The next cost of living raise will happen in July 2010 in the amount of 2.5%. We will get the same in July of 2011.
Q: I started a new position that was a promotion about a month ago and don’t see the raise on my paycheck, what should I do? Will the pay raise be retroactive?
A: Call the payroll department! It should be retroactive to the day you started the new position.
Article 9: Overtime and Premium Pay
Q: Can my manager make me work Over Time (OT) at the end of my shift without asking a more senior coworker?
A: Yes IF it is to complete a task you are already doing or there is no qualified person who is more senior than you. Article 12: Vacations
Q: Can my manager cancel my vacation time at the last moment even though I have all my reservations and the tickets paid for?
A: ONLY if you do not have the amount of vacation time needed in your bank to cover the time off. You should have the time in your bank 30 days prior to the time off. That being said, would it be awful for your manager to cancel the vacation at the last minute: absolutely! Vacations can be granted without the time in the bank but they are treated as leave without pay and are granted at your manager’s discretion.
Article 13: Sick Leave
Q: Do I need a doctor’s note if I call in sick?
A: Your manager may require certification from an attending physician or practitioner under the following circumstances: First, if the Employer has reasonable grounds to suspect that the employee is abusing sick leave privileges. Second, to verify a disability as that term is defined under state and federal law. Third, to determine whether the employee should be allowed to return to work if the Employer has reasonable grounds to be concerned about the employee’s ability to perform his/her duties in a safe and efficient manner.
Article 14: Leaves of Absence
Q: Do I have to use my vacation if I want to take a day off? I am saving it for a long vacation coming up.
A: You may request leave without pay but your manager does not have to approve it.
Article 18: Filling of Vacancies
Q: What is the order of job bidding rights?
A: To employees in the same job classification, with similar job duties, and within the affected work unit. The position shall be awarded to the most senior eligible bidding employee working in the same job classification in the work unit, and that employee shall be notified of appointment to the vacant position within ten (10) days of its posting.
